October 17, 2012

The Honourable Diane Ablonczy, Minister of Foreign Affairs (Americas and Consular Affairs) and Member of Parliament for Calgary-Nose Hill, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and Wayne Cao, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Calgary-Fort, on behalf of Alberta Municipal Affairs Minister Doug Griffiths, made an announcement for a $10.7 million joint investment for Lions Village by the Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta.

“Funding projects like Lions Village will not only improve the overall housing conditions for seniors in Calgary, but also help stimulate the local economy and create jobs”. Said Ablonczy

Lions Village is an affordable rental housing complex for seniors. It has been created to help meet the needs of low income seniors within the City of Calgary. Lions Village will be more than a home for seniors. It is designed to offer social and activity for the residents and welcome interaction with service clubs and services for seniors within the communities of West Hillhurst and Parkdale.

“Developing innovative solutions to housing challenges is important as housing is both an economic and social issue,” said Alberta Municipal Affairs Minister Doug Griffiths.

The Alberta Government will proceed to succeeding in their goal to create 11,000 affordable housing units by 2012 with more than 8,700 units being supported during the first three years of the provincial affordable housing initiative.

“Alberta continues to close the gap in demand for housing by investing wisely with partner, and each year more housing comes on stream providing a better quality of life for thousands of Albertans in need”.
