Joint Government Funding Increases Affordable Housing in Calgary

The Honourable Diane Ablonczy, Minister of Foreign Affairs (Americas and Consular Affairs) and Member of Parliament for Calgary-Nose Hill, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and Wayne Cao, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Calgary-Fort, on behalf of Alberta Municipal Affairs Minister Doug Griffiths, made an announcement for a $10.7 million joint investment for Lions Village by the Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta.

“Funding projects like Lions Village will not only improve the overall housing conditions for seniors in Calgary, but also help stimulate the local economy and create jobs”. Said Ablonczy

Lions Village is an affordable rental housing complex for seniors. It has been created to help meet the needs of low income seniors within the City of Calgary. Lions Village will be more than a home for seniors. It is designed to offer social and activity for the residents and welcome interaction with service clubs and services for seniors within the communities of West Hillhurst and Parkdale.

“Developing innovative solutions to housing challenges is important as housing is both an economic and social issue,” said Alberta Municipal Affairs Minister Doug Griffiths.

The Alberta Government will proceed to succeeding in their goal to create 11,000 affordable housing units by 2012 with more than 8,700 units being supported during the first three years of the provincial affordable housing initiative.

“Alberta continues to close the gap in demand for housing by investing wisely with partner, and each year more housing comes on stream providing a better quality of life for thousands of Albertans in need”.

Canada promotes Quebec’s Aerospace Industry

The Canadian Government is providing assistance to finance four projects to promote the aerospace industry in Quebec.

“The Aerospace Industries Association represents the nation’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of civil, military, and business aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aircraft systems, space systems, aircraft engines, missiles, materiel and related components, equipment, services and information technology.”

The $5.8 million consists of three repayable and one non-repayable investment in projects by Messier-Dowty Inc., part of France’s Safran Group, Shockform Aeronautique Inc., Delastek Inc. and Aero Montreal.

Messier-Dowty Inc. maintains a center of excellence for the Safran Group and specializes in production of landing gear.

Shockform Aeronautique Inc was founded in 2006 and is dedicated to emerging peening technologies.

Delastek Inc. provides integrated cock-pit solutions to Bombardier.

Established in 2006, Aero Montreal, Québec’s aerospace cluster, is a strategic think tank that brings together CEOs from Quebec aerospace industry, educational institutions, research centers, associations and unions.

“The Government of Canada is working with the aerospace industry to ensure it remains solid, globally competitive and at the forefront of technological development;” said Denis Lebel, Minister of transport, Infrastructure and Communities and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec.

“There is no question that the Canadian and Quebec aerospace and defense industries are driving forces of innovation in this country. Those that continue to innovate will lead us into the economy of the future”.

Founded in 2002, Sherbrook-based Metosak Inc. designs and manufactures value-added industrial products, such as equipment for off-road vehicles, for the airport sector and the transportation industry.

“The Government of Canada is committed to helping Quebec’s small and medium-sized enterprises develop in order to remain competitive and create jobs. By contributing to this Metosak project, we are fostering the growth and productivity of our local businesses,” said Minister Lebel.

The Quebec Economic Development Program provides a $270,000 repayable Canadian government grant from the department of Canada Economics.

Government Funding of $3.5 million for digital entertainment

The Canadian Film Centre has launched some of Canada’s most creative ideas and voices in film, television, screen acting, music, and digital media to the world.

The CFC Media Lab has a fifteen-year track record of being successful at building collaborative environments for creative transformation. They are currently working on ideaBOOST and a variety of exciting digital media initiatives that will engage and empower audiences across Canada. In 2012 ideaBOOST was officially launched for co-productions, and for broadening the skill sets of its employees.

Idea BOOST is designed to use social media to promote goals using tools such as; tweeting, liking and “boosting”.

The Canadian government has committed up to $3.5 million over three years for the CFC’s digital-entertainment initiatives, MP Gary Goodyear announced at the CFC’s annual barbeque in Toronto.  The money will go toward funding the tools and training required to help media and businesses showcase new and interactive products. The company is expected to create good quality and high-paying jobs.

ideaBOOST is four-month part-time prototype development boot camp experience. It offers Digital Media Companies several benefits. Some of the best minds in the entertainment, media, advertising, business, and technology worlds are ready to impart their knowledge and wisdom to the finalists.

ideaBOOST clients will receive hands-on support creating a business strategy based on a clear understanding of the market they face, and the true value of the product being created. A product strategy, a business model, a market analysis and marketing plan, and a financial analysis will support the business strategy, and an assessment of the capabilities needed for product success.

ideaBOOST will invest up to $15,000 towards prototype development costs such as production, coding, materials, and equipment for approved projects.
